Yesterday's trip to the farmers' market yielded:
Asian pears
Bartlett pears
Honey produced in Sacramento county
Japanese eggplant
the last summer sweet peppers
Malaysian siu pau (spelling?) in chicken and pork
Dinner last night was a warmed chicken bun and a roasted eggplant sprinkled with soy sauce and grated ginger. Late-night snack was a pear with crumbled Point Reyes Original Blue.
I haven't been home much the past few weeks, so my cooking opportunities have been limited. Even when I'm this busy, though, it still seems worthwhile to try and eat locally and seasonally. For one thing, it's cheaper! The siu pau were $1 each. Eggplant was 50 cents a pound. You get the idea. Much cheaper than eating out, much cheaper than putting together a formal meal.
And oh so good.
My god, please stop with describing the Farmers Market. I'm back in the US, but only till Wednesday, and then I return to the land of the 4-dollar-peach and ridiculously expensive other vegetables. In Hokkaido, corn, potatoes, onions and dairy products are reasonably priced. Everything else is not. Reading this site from Japan will be torturous!
