I'm going to cheat here and only give you the link to my favorite chocolate cake recipe. You'll all think I'm crazy, but honest, this is the easies, fudgiest cake you'll ever want. Yes, it's vegan - but there's no need to tell your friends!
Joe Ortiz: The Village Baker's Wife: The Desserts and Pastries That Made Gayle's Famous
If you've ever been to Gayle's in Santa Cruz, you'll want to at least look at this book. My copy is curled and stained from much hard use. Must use recipes include the chocolate chip cookies (which include powdered oatmeal) and the lavender shortbread. Lots of great tips for aspiring bakery owners, too. (****)
Deborah Madison: Local Flavors: Cooking and Eating from America's Farmers' Markets
Madison's well known for her vegetarian books. Local Flavors contains guides to different kinds of produce, plus seasonally appropriate recipes and insight into America's myriad farmers' markets and their varying styles. Includes a few non-veg recipes. (***)
